The Best Language Community on the Internet is About to Get Better

It’s November, the leaves are changing and so are we*

After two years of serving the community in a plethora of different ways, we are deciding to double down on what has been most successful and what we are noticing has been most helpful to the community. We started the GG Community and server in Autumn, and it seems like the end of the year always brings introspection and magical changes for us.

We want to start off by saying how touched and emotional we are to have been supported as much as we have over these two years. It has been amazing to grow with you… and we look forward to this new chapter!

The biggest change is that The Polyglot Magazine, Issue 10 ‘Cultural Compass — How Languages Influence Our World’ will be our last issue for the foreseeable future.

I know, end of an era! 10 Issues of curated language magic. We’re super grateful to everyone who has ever purchased an issue or subscribed to the magazine. We’re just as emotional as you are about letting go of what has been the core of GG for two years.

But it’s not in vain!

With a reallocation of resources, time, and energy, we will be focusing efforts on the following in November and in 2023:

Improving the discord server

The discord server has slowly become the heart of everything we do at Gladly Global. It’s a space to laugh, cry, complain, sweat, and study with like-minded individuals who love language and culture. We are a family, and we wanted to make the family the centre of all future movements here at GG.

We want to feel confident when we say, The Gladly Global Server is the healthiest space on the internet for mature, motivated language learners who are looking for accountability, solidarity, and motivation.

Creating tips & tutorials

We started GG with the goal of helping people learn how to create study plans that are as unique as they themselves are! We want to get back to this by creating more YouTube videos, IG tutorials, and short vocabulary introductions. For free of course!

Gathering resources

This is something we’ve wanted to do for a while, but so many resources pass through our hands as language influencers, and we want to dedicate more effort to documenting and listing them for easy use and access. We plan to make a Notion database and share reviews on our blog, with the community’s help, of course!

Creating systems of accountability for the community

We are HUGE on healthy accountability systems at GG. We have study rooms open 24/7s and study streamers who help keep you on task, and group to-do lists available for free. But in addition to that…

The accountability meeting we hold for members every Sunday will now be open to all patrons!

Creating a safe space for language learners

Not everything is about languages, we are people first. You should always feel you have a place to talk and share at GG.

Helping community members in need

Although we are big advocates of needing less to study languages, being able to invest in your education is so helpful and motivating too! We plan to start saving a portion of our Ko-fi donations to giveaway free textbooks, online tutoring credits, and more!

In-person meetups

In 2023, we are hoping to host some in-person events in Europe and Asia! The pandemic has calmed, and it’s no secret that face-to-face interactions are worlds more helpful for language learning than online.

Bit by bit, we’d like to take this into the real world!

The Language Leader Programme (helping language creators / passionate people to help the community)

Language Leaders are volunteers or community leaders who want to use the GG Discord space to help language learners in their respective target languages. We hope to work with more language creators and passionate volunteers to improve what’s available to the language community (without salesy BS or empty toxic productivity suggestions)

GG has always been a project aimed at creating a healthier environment for language learners online, and we’ve never been the best at communicating that — — but we are hoping that our reorganisation and focus on the discord server & tutorials will do just that!
